Last night I read on Digg that Skype is allowing SkypeOut calls to/from Canada and the US for free…at least until December 31, 2006 for now. Read more about it here:

Apparently there’s a problem in that if your IP address is within the range of 70.x.x.x to 79.x.x.x, this might not work. I’m in that range at the moment
I’ll test it out tonight and hopefully discover that I’m not affected. If it works, I’ll pat myself on the back for not signing up for a long distance plan when I switched my landline service from Bell to Rogers earlier this year. If it doesn’t work, I’ll continuously renew my IP in the hopes that I’ll end up in a different pool

It definitely works. I called our landline from Skype and it worked perfectly. I can see a whole lot of Telco’s freaking out about this. Even this Senator from Alaska is up in arms
Hopefully Skype keeps this free North American SkypeOut feature around beyond the end of this year.
