This past Monday during our weekly hockey game, I blocked a wrist shot with an unpadded area of my left leg - the area near where the skate and shin pad don’t meet. In all honestly, I haven’t done a whole lot in the past few years that could result in any bruising. Yet when the puck hit my shin…wow, did that hurt. A funny thing happened immediately afterwards, though. I skated it off and put it out of my mind. Back in my younger days when I played competitive hockey, as well as street hockey, I got bumps and bruises all of the time and they never bothered me except for my (still to this day) displaced tailbone. For a split second, I thought that my long absence from hockey would result in me writhing in pain on the ice like the computer nerd I’ve become. That whole “you don’t forget - it’s like riding a bike” analogy rings true. That night, I even scored four goals. I scored the first one before blocking that shot, but scored three more goals after that happened. I also picked up a periosteal bruise as a memento ![]()
